Constructed to survive the roughest terrain,
the LM series entered full scale production after a number of prototypes
had been shown to the public and armed forces. The LM002, which was introduced
in 1982, used a 5.2 liter V-12 engine derived from the Countach. This four
wheel drive vehicle measures six feet tall and weighs 6,800 pounds. The
passenger area is composed of leather and wood inlays. Power steering,
power windows and air conditioning are also standard options. Despite its
size and weight, the LM002’s performance was still far superior to that
of most contemporary cars.
The LM001 was Lamborghini’s second attempt
to produce a high performance all terrain vehicle. It was introduced in
1981. This prototype had a 4.7 liter rear mounted V-8 engine with 382hp.
The engine was powerful enough to deliver a top speed of 180kmh. Full production
never occurred because the front end was too light, creating control difficulties.
The LMA, introduced in 1982, attempted
to solve the stability problems that plagued the LM001. It included a revised
suspension, chassis and power steering. As it was developed primarily for
the military, the LMA was fitted with sophisticated radio and satellite
equipment. The engine was moved to the front, but it was still not powerful
enough.
The LM004 differed from the other all terrain
prototypes. The idea of a purely military vehicle was abandoned in favor
of a more comfortable design for everyday civilian use. While the production
version (LM002) featured a 5 liter engine, the LM004 featured a 7 liter
engine that would later be used in offshore competitions. Top speed was
clocked at approximately 200kmh (125mph). The only prototype was built
in 1986. |
